Nina Carbury rides at Grand National 2010. Take a look at our Grand National 2010 tips page for what the word is for Aintree.

Following was reported by Eclipse Magazine:

Nina Carberry was the winner of the Cheltenham Festival’s 2009 Award for ‘The Outstanding Contribution made by a Lady to Jump Racing’.

Born on July 21, 1984, Nina Carberry has continued her family’s fine tradition of riding at the highest level. Her father Tommy won numerous big races as a jockey including two Cheltenham Gold Cups and a Grand National on L’Escargot and is now a successful trainer, saddling Bobbyjo to victory in the 1999 Grand National. Her brothers Paul and Philip are also very successful Jump jockeys.

With what seems a carbon copy of the impish grin, immense natural ability and the fierce determination of her brother Paul, Nina has had a rapid rise over the last five years from promising young amateur jockey in Ireland to being hailed as perhaps the best female rider in Jump racing’s history. In fact, despite his success, Paul is always quick to tell you that Nina is the most talented jockey in the family!

Their father Tommy is one of the giants of the Jumping game himself and there was certainly no prouder man than Carberry senior when Nina became the first lady to ride a winner at The Festival against the professional jockeys for 18 years, partnering Dabiroun to victory at 20/1 in the Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle in 2005.

She followed this with victory aboard well-backed favourite Heads Onthe Ground in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Steeplechase in 2007 and repeated the dose in the same race in 2008 on Garde Champetre.

Nina also became one of an elite band of just four female riders to complete the course in the history of the Grand National, finishing 9th behind Numbersixvalverde in the world’s most famous steeplechase in April 2006.

Still in her early 20’s, Nina Carberry seems sure to have many more big winners ahead of her and there is no doubt that she has put female Jump jockeys well and truly back on the map.

Commenting on the award, Nina said “I’m thrilled to win this award, especially as it comes at The Festival, which is the pinnacle of our sport. To be chosen ahead of the other nominees is a real honour.”

Andy Clifton, Cheltenham’s Communications Manager, said: “Nina is a thoroughly deserving winner of this award, which is now in its third year. She is talented, personable, hard working and a great ambassador both for Jump racing and for Ladies in sport. Nina also has a great record of success at The Festival itself, which is an added bonus.”

The panel of judges for this year’s award consisted of Clare Balding, Ann Saunders and Gee Bradburne.

This year’s final shortlist was completed by trainers Sally Alner, Henrietta Knight and Venetia Williams, former trainer Jenny Pitman and Carrie Humble, Founder and Director of the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre.
Take a look at our Grand National 2010 tips page for what the word is for Aintree.

TIMMY MURPHY and the Grand National 2010.

There are similarities with TIMMY and R.WALSH in that both their fathers were both Irish champion amateur jockeys and it was no surprise that he turned professional early in his career and moved to England where he established himself a force in the national hunt scene. Has had a chequered career lately)but has sorted that out with great professionalism. Took over from A.P. at the D.PIPE set-up @ POND HOUSE and within a short period of time he won the GRAND NATIONAL on COMPLY OR DIE IN ’08. There are few jockeys in front of TIMMY in the pecking order when trainers need a top jockey for their charges. Visit our Grand National Tips page. Timmy’s forte is letting his mount travel at the back of the field and quietly pick of the field and produce his mount as late as possible. According to most there is no body better in executing this manoeuvre.

RUBY WALSH.

Son of Ted Walsh(Irish champion amateur jockey himself) Ruby turned pro after winning back to back champion amateur titles and at the age of just 20yrs. Outside of Ireland few people had heard of Ruby Walsh. His first ride in the GRAND NATIONAL was for his father TED on board a very well bet horse called PAPILLON it won the 2000 grand national and the rest as the saying goes is history. All of the national hunt scene sat up and took notice of this fresh faced kid from Co. KILDARE. In the last 10yrs Ruby Walsh has won everything going with honours and plaudits coming from every angle. As he is based both in Ireland and England riding for both current champion trainers the champion jockey title is impossible to win because of these commitments but i don’t think that bothers this cool calculated jockey. TOP CLASS JOCKEY IN EVERY WAY. And has no peers according to most. Checkout our Grand National Tips page.

The full details on all the different types of bet for the 2010 Grand National at Aintree racecourse.

Before placing your bets you may wonder what type of bets are available for you. The guide below gives all the types of Grand National bets are available and explains what each one is. From a single bet to a combination tricast, all the information is here.

Win Only

Also called a single bet, a Single is a bet on one selection in one Grand National event. Your selection must be successful to get a return.

Each Way Betting

An Each Way (EW) Grand National bet is basically two bets. A win bet like above and a place bet. The first thing to know about an Each Way bet is how the staking works. A bet of £25 EW is exactly as it sounds – “£25 each way” – i.e. Two £25 bets. So £25 EW is a £50 bet in all. The place part of the bet is essentially a backup bet. You will receive a return on this part of the bet if your selection wins but also if it nearly wins. What this means in practice varies by sport but is always quoted with the list of odds as something like this: “Each Way ¼ 1, 2, 3”. This means that the place bet of your each way bet will pay out at odds of ¼ of the win odds if your selection finishes in positions 1, 2 or 3. If you finish 4th or lower it loses.

Laying Horses

A lay bet is a bet that something won’t win. If you lay a horse at the Grand National and the horse loses, you win. If you lay a horse and the horse wins, you lose. This type of bet has grown significantly in popularity over the last few years with the growth of betting exchanges in particular. The way returns on lay bets are calculated is basically the mirror image of the win bet – as if you are laying a bet, then someone else has the corresponding win bet.

There are many, many ways to place a bet; below are listed some of the most popular bets. Horse Racing specials are only offered on certain races closer to the time of running. If you fancy placing a special bet, check back here and there will be an explanation of that type of bet.

Doubles

A double consists of 1 bet involving 2 selections in different horse race events. Both must be successful to get a return.

Trebles and Accumulators

These are similar to a double in that they consist of one bet involving 3 or more selections in different events. All selections must be successful to get a return.

Specials

Trixie

A Trixie consists of 4 bets involving 3 selections in different horse racing events. The bet includes 3 doubles and 1 treble. A minimum of 2 of your selections must be successful to get a return.

Patent

A Patent consists of 7 bets involving 3 selections in different big racing events. The bet includes a single on each selection, plus 3 doubles and 1 treble. Just one successful selection guarantees a return.

Yankee

A Yankee consists of 11 bets involving 4 selections in different events. The bet includes 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and an accumulator. A minimum of 2 of your selections must be successful to get a return.

Lucky 15

Lucky 15 consists of 15 bets involving 4 selections in different big racing events. The bet includes 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 fourfold. If only one selection wins, as a consolation, returns are paid to double the odds. If all four selections win, a bonus of 10% is added to total returns. For the bonus to apply, all selections must win (none void or non-runners). For each-way bets the consolation is paid only on the win part of the bet. Lucky 15 bets are accepted on horse racing and greyhounds only.

Canadian (Super Yankee)

A Canadian (also known as a Super Yankee) consists of 26 bets involving 5 selections in different events. The bet includes 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-folds plus an accumulator. A minimum of 2 of your selections must be successful to get a return.

Lucky 31

A Lucky 31 consists of 31 bets involving 5 selections in different events. The bets include 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds and an accumulator. If only one selection wins, returns are paid to double the odds. If all five selections win, a bonus of 15% is added to total returns. For the bonus to apply, all selections must win (none void or non-runners). For each-way bets the consolation is paid only on the win part of the bet. Lucky 31 bets are accepted on horse racing and greyhounds only.

Heinz

A Heinz consists of 57 bets involving 6 selections in different events. The bet includes 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfolds, 6 fivefolds and an accumulator. A minimum of 2 of your selections must be successful to get a return.

Forecasts

A forecast bet is one where you predict the first and second in a horse or greyhound race. For details of the sources used for forecast dividends, and additional rules relating to forecast betting please see our Rules for Horse racing and Greyhounds.

Straight Forecasts

This bet involves 2 selections in 1 race finishing 1st and 2nd in the order named. A Straight Forecast (FC) dividend is declared based on the Starting Prices (SP’s) of all the horses in the race for example the Grand National 2010. (A Straight Forecast is known in many countries as an Exacta). e.g. 1.20 Lingfield.

Pistol
Dizzy

£10 SFC

1 Unit Stake = £10.00
1 Race = 1.20 Lingfield
2 Selections

The first named selection (Pistol) must be placed 1st, and the second named (Dizzy) must be placed 2nd for this bet to win. If successful you would receive 10 times the Computer Straight Forecast (CSF).

Tricasts and Others

As you can see the list goes on, essentially all other bets are variants of the previous betting types. If you decide to place a super-heinz (120 bets) for example, you probably don’t need us to tell you how to place one of these!!. If you would like further information just contact us or check out odds on horses (after all most of these betting types are specific to horses or dogs).

Huge interest in the Aintree Grand National 2010 online. Odds, Trainers, Jockeys, Runners and big race news are the most popular searches at OddsOnGrandNational.co.uk.

The last time a Grand National winner came through with such long odds was 1967, and Mon Mome’s victory in the big race came as a massive shock to the racing community. Grand National experts OddsOnGrandNational.co.uk, who provide a free resource offering everything you could need related to the Grand National 2010, have also noted record interest in this year’s race.

While most of us probably squandered our annual 50p bet on one of the more amusing horse names, those who backed last year’s winner were indeed laughing all the way to the bookies having taken a punt on a 100/1 outsider. Mr. Mckee from Odds On Grand National said, “On the whole last years race was a victory for the bookies, as they took a lot of bets and had to pay out on a relatively small number.
Most people that take a shot on the Grand National are just doing it for the fun, and so aren’t too fussed if they see a return. With this in mind last years race was a huge success for everyone as we saw an unprecedented number of people visiting our specially tailored Grand National betting site prior to the race.”
